The Synthesis of Integrated Workplace Management and Smart Buildings -
A Paradigm Shift that is Already Happening

Integrated Workplace Management (IWM) is an integrated set of capabilities that brings together the real-estate lifecycle: Namely, Planning; Construction & Project Management; Property Administration; Operations (Space Management, Facility and Maintenance Management); and, finally, Sustainability and Compliance Management.

Over the last decade, IWM has gained a strategic position as a key enabler in improving the operational efficiency and effectiveness of organisations. Consequently, IWM software platforms are gaining the interest of CxOs as an adjunct to their ERP systems.

In contrast, Smart Building and Smart Workplace solutions have focussed on embedding and integrating real-time control systems and technologies to enable buildings to be more intelligent, operationally efficient and dynamically responsive to changing environmental conditions and occupant's needs. The key drivers for smart buildings include lighting, power and energy, automated people movement, security and access control, life safety and indoor air conditioning, quality and comfort.

In practice, IWM and Smart Buildings have existed as distinctly separate disciplines and, as a consequence, use different operating platforms and models. The synthesis of IWM and Smart Buildings is a paradigm shift in the way the two disciplines operate. However, it demands a unified approach to technology and business integration to unbundle the potential opportunities and synergies that the integrated solution brings. The arising benefits are, however, enormous. It also provides a platform for business transformation.

SSI's approach to integrating IWM and Smart Buildings enables organisations to drive performance and extract inefficiencies across their physical, virtual and mobile workplace processes and assets. With inbuilt mechanisms that provide Operational Intelligence where the entire unified system can be managed by exceptions which results in improved efficiency. It also enables fast and easy adaptations of organizational processes and operations to suit the changing environment and needs that an organization constantly faces.
