Innovation and Business Process Excellence
Innovation at SSI

Performance and sustainability with respect to an organization should coexist in a way that one synergistically reinforces and drives the other to make the organization an intelligent and effective workplace.

For example:

How can organisations better leverage their assets to improve their asset utilisation and performance, and align them to their business goals and objectives in a way that is sustainable?
How can the smart building infrastructure better support the business processes of building occupants to enable greater performance, sustainability and intelligence across these processes?

The following describes some key areas of innovation:

Workplace Management

Unified communications, workplace management and cloud computing has the capability to converge into a seamless, intelligent management process of the physical, virtual and mobile work environment. This leads to effective space utilization and productivity gains with equally greater gains on sustainability and process intelligence, which is being researched and implemented by SSI on a continuous basis.

Another area of innovation is the synthesis of smart building technology and integrated workplace management which enables buildings to be responsive and adaptive to dynamically changing processes and needs of the occupants. We believe this will be the precursor to next generation Smart Workplace.

Real-Time Business Intelligence

"Information made valuable through simplicity & design" is one of the key goals of SSI. Both business as well as operational intelligence is critical to an organization. However the day to day operational and transactional data gains more importance due to it requiring immediate attention and processing as part of the daily workflows of an organization.

Presenting both Operational and Business Intelligence in a simple but meaningful manner is often a challenge.

Reports generally deal with business intelligence and historical data and improve knowledge on current business practices, enhance organisational decision making processes and enable the formulation of sustainable business strategies.

A dashboard provides an intuitive way of monitoring and presenting critical real time operational data. This will lead to better resource utilization, reduce risk, lower life cycle costs, improve operational efficiency and enable better customer service. SSI helps organisations achieve real-time business intelligence through innovative dashboards and reports to meet critical business and user needs.

Underlying the SSI Real-Time BI Framework is the use of metadata and business process modelling: Metadata modelling provides the ability to intelligently analyse dynamic data across disparate systems and applications. This is where Operational Intelligence breathes life in to organizational performance management. Business process modelling enables the analysis of critical business processes to identify process bottlenecks, inefficiencies and root causes. You can view, monitor and ensure process performance and make real-time decisions about process operations.

Dashboards allow 'drill down' functionality so users can navigate between different layers of information. For example, a user can easily navigate from building level information to a floor or zone level or even to view equipment level information. This feature enables users to identify the source of problems easily.

Dashboards are designed to be completely web-based and accessible by mobile devices such as tablets, smart phones etc.

Commissioning and Continuous Commissioning

The commissioning of building systems is an important quality assurance process. Its 'concept through occupancy' process assures that buildings are designed, built, and operated to meet the original design intent.

Usually many installation / system set-up issues are identified each time a job is commissioned. Further, the process continues throughout the on-going lifecycle of the building. Problems that surface later can usually be traced to the lack of proper commissioning or to the fact that the commissioning related data and scripts are not available / followed properly. These are a compelling reason to include an adequate and well managed oversight, data upload and configuration of acceptance testing criterion, which shall be used for the commissioning of the building systems.

SSI's Commissioning Management and Acceptance Testing Methodology and Tools provide an effective system for ensuring that all subsystems are "operationally" tested and commissioned through a well-documented commissioning process.

This allows for passive and active commissioning of systems and also forms a central repository for commissioning documents. Acceptance testing is based on success of all these aspects. The ability to monitor and trend real-time points along with the process driven approach provides the perfect platform for Continuous Commissioning.
